A tap-switching voltage regulator is a special auto-transformer with multiple taps for bucking or boosting the input voltage. The taps are switched by relay or preferably, solid-state switch, which allows the taps to be changed at the “zero-crossing” – at the instant the AC voltage passes through zero from positive to negative and vice-versa.
